At My Altar
(For Haiti, For Congo, for Palestine, For Sudan)
Azsaneé Truss
These four digital collages are from a piece installed at the 2024 Screening Scholarship Media Festival (SSMF): Practices of Necromancy & Resurrection. They are an Afrofuturist/black feminist mediation on anti-imperialist struggle. While they does not comprehensively represent all of the fights for freedom currently happening around the world, it invokes a few instances of peoples surviving and resisting massive atrocities taking place in this very moment — specifically those that are ongoing in Haiti, Congo, Palestine, and Sudan. While inviting us to take a moment to mourn the lives of those lost to ongoing Western imperialist violence, they are also a call to those who view them to take a moment to envision what freedom can and will look like in the times to come. They are a veneration, an an invocation, and a supplication.
